Blizzard took inspiration from Westwood Studio's Dune II: The Battle For Arrakis, that established the genre of RTS, but expanded the concept with new type of missions, skirmishes and random maps. The success of Warcraft lead to Warcraft II: Tides Of Darkness and Warcraft III, and created one of the most popular videogames franchise ever.
